On June 28, the Southern Regional Electricity Market officially launched its continuous settlement trial operation, becoming the first electricity spot market in China to transcend provincial administrative boundaries. This marks a significant milestone in advancing the unified and optimized allocation of power resources across multiple provinces — an important step toward building a national unified electricity market.
As a core component of China's national electricity market system, the Southern Regional Electricity Market covers Guangdong, Yunnan, Guizhou, and Hainan provinces as well as Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region. The southern market has registered over 220,000 entities, including a wide range of power generation sources — coal-fired, nuclear, hydro, gas-fired, and renewable energy — as well as power users and electricity retailers.
With the shift to continuous settlement, the market is expected to achieve an average daily trading volume of 3.8 billion kWh. This transition will further strengthen the market's role in power resource allocation, promote energy optimization, and enhance mechanisms for ensuring energy security across the region.
